George Russell Biography

George Russell is a man of motto “If in doubt, go flat out”. With just four years in Formula 1, he has caught the eye of almost entire Formula 1 universe. Russell was born on 15th February 1998 in King’s Lynn, England. George Russell height is measured at 6ft. He was Formula 2 World Champion in 2018 which bought him a seat in Williams Formula 1 team in 2019. Currently, he is driving for Mercedes AMG alongside Lewis Hamilton.

Russell started karting in 2006 and advanced to the cadet class by 2009. He later won the British Open and MSA championships. He switched to the Rotax Mini Max division in 2010, where he won the British Grand Prix for Kartmasters, Super One, and Formula Kart Stars championships. In 2011, Russell advanced to the KF3, and in 2012, he won the CIK-FIA European Championship, which he successfully defended. Russell finished 19th in the KF1 CIK-FIA World Championship in 2013, his final year of karting.

Formula Renault 2.0

Russell’s single-seater racing career began in 2014 when he competed in the Formula Renault 2.0 Alps series. He had agreed to compete for Prema but switched to Koiranen GP at the final minute. He finished fourth in the championship despite missing a race due to illness, earning a podium finish at the Red Bull Ring.

Formula 4

Russell participated in the Formula 4 Championship in 2014 alongside the reigning champions Lanan Racing. With teammate Arjun Maini and the HHC Motorsport, he began the season’s last race in a four-way title contest. Russell won the race, his fifth of the year, after qualifying on pole, narrowly defeating Maini for the championship by just three points.

Formula 3

Russell committed to competing in the 2017 GP3 Series with ART Grand Prix. In November 2016, he participated in the team’s post-season test at Yas Marina.

With one round of the season remaining at Yas Marina, Russell needed four victories, three pole positions, and five additional podium finishes to put him in a position to win the championship at Jerez. Russell secured an unbeatable lead in the standings and went on to win the 2017 GP3 Series championship by finishing fourth in race two.

Russell was confirmed as a driver for the ART Grand Prix in Baku for the second round of the 2018 FIA Formula 2 Championship in January of that year. Russell led for the majority of the feature race before a late safety car caused drama at the restart. Russell came from the back of the field in the sprint race, setting the fastest lap and winning from 12th on the starting grid.

In Barcelona, Russell won his first feature race of the year after outdueling Nyck de Vries and earning his second victory of the campaign.

After a season-long fight with fellow Briton Lando Norris, he would later go on to win the title with a victory in Abu Dhabi. With his victory, he joined Hamilton, Hülkenberg, and Leclerc as the fourth rookie F2 champion to win both the F3 and F2 championships in the same year.

Formula 1 career
Williams (2019-2021)

2019, George Russell’s rookie season was the one George would like to forget. He was the only driver on the grid to end their season without scoring any point. His main rival on the grid was his teammate, Robert Kubica. However, he out-qualified his teammate in all 20 races.

2020, George Russell still drove for Williams teaming up with Nicholas Latifi. With Williams there were few chances to score some points but unfortunately, he was unable to gain points. Sometimes due to red flags, crashes and even poor starts. In 2020, he got a chance to drive Mercedes car as Hamilton was covid +. He qualified at P2 and led most of the race, but due to mechanical tyre error he was dropped down but recovered soon after. Later he got a puncture and finished his race at P9, scoring his first ever Formula 1 Championship points. 

2021 was a better season for George Russell, finishing up with 16 points at P15. He achieved his first Formula 1 podium at Belgian Grand Prix finishing second, an emotional moment for Russell. Additionally, he scored points at Hungarian, Italian and Russian Grand Prix.

Mercedes (2022 - present)

2022 season is by far George’s best season in Formula 1. Consistently scoring points in every race of the calendar except British and Singapore Grand prix. He finished his season ahead of his legendary teammate Lewis Hamilton with 275 points at P4. He also got his first Formula 1 win this season at Brazilian Grand Prix.

Personal Life

The youngest child of Steve and Alison, Russell was born in King’s Lynn, Norfolk. He was joined by his older brother Benjy and sister Cara. At the age of 7, Russell started karting after spending a lot of time around karting tracks and his brother Benjy, who also participated in competitive racing. Russell was born and raised in Wisbech, Cambridgeshire. He attended Wisbech Grammar School before relocating to Milton Keynes at the age of 18 in order to be nearer to his racing teams.
