Lando Norris is a belge-british Formula 1 driver, currently driving for McLaren F1 team. 2022 season driven with Daniel Riccardo and will be driving with Oscar Piastri in 2023. Lando was born in Bristol, England on 13 November 1999. Lando Norris height measures at 5ft 7in. Lando Norris had a very successful junior racing career. He won MSA Formula Championship in 2015, Toyota Racing Series, Eurocup Formula Renault 2.0 and Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup in 2016.
Norris joined McLaren Drivers Programme in 2017 and won FIA Formula 3 Championship with Carlin racing and was promoted to Formula 2 Championship in 2018 where he finished second. In 2018, he was announced at driver for McLaren alongside Carlos Sainz. He clinched his first Formula 1 podium at the 2020 Austrian Grand Prix and his best finish is P2 in the 2021 Italian Grand Prix, finishing behind teammate Daniel Ricciardo.
Junior Racing Career
Lando had a lot of unsuccessful championships in karting but also had a few successful campaign. In 2008 and 2009 he couldn’t manage to finish in top 10 in any karting championship. In 2010, he participated in Super 1 National Championship and finished P3. Again in 2011, he didn’t finish in top 3 in any championship but in 2012, he finished P1 in Formula Kart Stars, P2 in Super 1 National Championship and P3 in Copa de Campeones — KF3.
In 2013, he finished P1 in WSK Euro Series – KFJ, CIK-FIA European Championship – KFJ and CIK-FIA International Super Cup – KFJ. Lando Norris also finished P2 in WSK Super Master Series – KFJ while driving for Ricky Flynn Motorsport. Again in 2014, while driving for Ricky Flynn Motorsport, he finished P1 in CIK-FIA World Championship and P3 in CIK-FIA European Championship.
Ginetta Junior Championship
In 2014, with HHC Motorsport, he finished P3 in Ginetta Junior Championship with 4 wins and 7 podiums. He finished his season with 432 points with P2 finish at his home race.
In 2015 with Carlin Motorsport, Lando Norris won MSA Formula Championship with 413 points. During that season, he won 8 races and grasped 7 podiums. Among those 8 wins, he won his home Grand Prix as well.
Toyota Racing Series
In 2016, Norris won Toyota Racing Series with six wins and five podiums. He finished his season with 924 points
In 2017, Lando won Formula 3 Championship with Carlin and Volkswagen engine. He started his F3 campaign with a win at Silverstone followed by P3 at the same circuit. All-in-all, he had nine wins and eleven podiums with 441 points.
Macau Grand Prix
With Carlin, in 2016, he qualified ninth but DNF the qualification race. However, he finished the main race at P11.
In 2017, with Carlin itself, Lando qualified at second place, finished qualification race at seventh and main race at P2.
In 2018, with the British Carlin team, Lando Norris participated in FIA Formula 2 Championship. He finished the season at P2 with just one win although he’d eight podiums. He finished his season behind his Formula 1 colleague George Russell by 68 points who is currently driving for Mercedes AMG and 7 points ahead of Alex Albon who is driving for Williams. However, Carlin won the Constructors’ Championship.
24 Hours Daytona
In the Legendary 24 hours Daytona, Lando Norris drove for united Autosport alongside Fernando Alonso. They completed 718 laps with 38th overall position and 13th class position.
Formula 1 career
McLaren (2019 - present)
2019. Norris has a contract with McLaren to drive alongside Carlos Sainz Jr. in the Formula 1 World Championship. At the Australian Grand Prix, he made his debut and qualified eighth. He placed twelveth overall. In the subsequent race, the Bahrain Grand Prix, he finished sixth and earned his maiden Formula One points. Three consecutive points finishes followed at the Italian, SIngapore and Russian Grands Prix.
With 49 points, Norris ended his first Formula 1 season in eleventh place in the drivers’ standings. Sainz, a teammate, finished with 96 points, but Norris qualified for eleven out of the twenty-one races ahead of Sainz. Norris signed a multi-year contract to remain with McLaren from the 2020 season to the 2022 season during his rookie year.
2020, Norris qualified in fourth place for the season-opening Austrian Grand Prix, but a grid penalty for Lewis Hamilton saw him move up to third, the highest grid position of his career at the time and the highest for McLaren since the 2016 Austrian Grand Prix. In order to finish 4.802 seconds behind Hamilton on the final lap, Norris turned in the fastest lap of the race, earning him his first career podium finish. This was his only podium in 2020.
Six consecutive points finishes achieved between the British and Tuscan Grands Prix. Norris ended the season ninth in the drivers’ championship with 97 points, eight points behind Carlos.
2021, Lando Norris remained with McLaren in 2021 season partnering with Daniel Ricciardo. Norris finished shy of podium in many races in 2021 season. He managed only four podiums in 2021. He finished his season in sixth place in the standings, having lost out to former teammate Sainz by just 4.5 points. Despite being able to earn points in each of the final seven races of the season, Norris was unable to finish any of them in a position higher than seventh.
Norris won his maiden Formula One pole position at the Russian Grand Prix despite shifting weather conditions. On the first lap, he gave the lead to Carlos Sainz before reclaiming it on the thirteenth lap. Until rain started to fall over the final laps, Norris held the lead with Lewis Hamilton just behind him. Hamilton pitted for intermediate tyres, but Norris opted to stay out on dry-weather tyres. As the rain quickly got harder, Hamilton was able to pass Norris and Norris was forced to stop for intermediates. Norris placed seventh and turned the quickest lap of the contest and losing his chance to claim his first F1 win due to his poor strategical decision.
2022, Lando Norris signed a contract extension with McLaren in February 2022 that would keep him with the team through at least 2025. With poor performing McLaren, Norris claimed only one podium throughout the season at Emilia Romagna GP. Although, he managed to secure points at all races except Canadian GP and Belgium GP. Lando finished his season at P7 with 122 points. 85 points ahead of his teammate who moved to Red Bull Racing as their reserve driver in 2023.
2023, Oscar Piastri, who will take the place of Daniel Ricciardo is the 2021 Formula 2 champion, will link up with Norris at McLaren.
Virtual 24 Hours La Mans
With his F1 counterpart Max Verstappen, sim-racers Atze Kerkhof and Greger Huttu, and Team Redline, Norris participated in the 2020 24 Hours of Le Mans Virtual. After qualifying in fifth place for the race start, the team encountered a number of technical issues on Verstappen’s end and was forced to retire overnight as a result of Verstappen crashing. Norris and the team eventually placed 25th in both the LMP2 standings and the overall standings after a Red Flag was raised, allowing them to resume the field 18 laps later and last on the LMP2 grid.
